Minocqua, Wisconsin, affectionately named "The Island City", is surrounded by a vast amount of lakes, streams, trees and wildlife. Naturally, this makes for great entertainment year round. However, as Minocqua has gotten a reputation for being the best summer vacation spot (and rightfully so), our guests may not be privy to all the fun that is to be had during the winter months.

Winter in the Northwoods is remarkable. When the snow falls and the trees are covered, it is simply magical. As you step outside, ready to embark on the day, your eyes are almost blinded by the gleaming whiteness everywhere. Tree limbs bend down under the weight of the snow, fresh deer tracks can be seen along the pathways and if you're lucky, you might even see an eagle flying overhead. It surely is a sight to see.
Now if you're anything like me, lounging around in my cabin with the fireplace going, a hot cup of tea in my hand and my feet propped up on the couch, staring out the window is all I need to enjoy a winter day. But lots of our guests are very active in the winter time and enjoy many of the outdoor sports and recreation activities available in Minocqua in the winter.
Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing is available both at our Minocqua Winter Park (local ski center with tons of trails) and along many groomed trails throughout the county. We have businesses in town that offer rentals and you're welcome to bring your own. Nitschke's Northern Resort cabins all have large enough entryways to pile up your gear without having to drag it all into the heart of the cabin. Cross-country skiing is a great way to explore the area in peace and quiet and I hear it's excellent exercise (I'll take your word for it!)
Snowmobiling

Now I'm not for sure, but I'd bet that this "sport" is the #1 reason guests come up north during the winter. We always have a full resort when the snow packs down and the trails open for action. Many businesses cater to the snowmobilers offering areas to park, remove and hang gear and even some with drive up windows for that hot cup of coffee much needed after a day on the snow. Again, rentals are available near by or feel free to bring your own. Our resort offers trailer parking onsite.
Fat Tire Biking

This sport is really becoming popular these days. Driving around town, doing my errands, I have seen tons of fat tire bikes out exploring the area. It sounds like this is the perfect style bike for trudging over snow-packed trails in the winter time, although, I don't have any personal experience in this department. Our very own Minocqua Winter Park offers fat tire bikers the opportunity to ride the trails as well and after a long day, they are welcome to warm up in the café while grabbing a bite to eat.
Ice Fishing

You simply can't mention Minocqua in the Winter without mentioning ice fishing. They go together like peanut butter and jelly! Ice fishing is a major sport up here and for good reason. Our lakes freeze early and stay solid late into the season. When those Chicago folks are first grabbing their hats for the season, we're almost ready to auger a hole in the ice! The beautiful thing about our resort is that we are located directly on Lake Minocqua, so ice fishing is just a stroll away.
While this certainly isn't an exhaustive list of winter activities to enjoy while vacationing at Nitschke's Northern Resort, it certainly can get you excited enough to come give it a try. There's also snowshoeing, sledding, snowtubing, downhill skiing, ice skating, skijoring, 4-wheeling and so much more! When you're ready to bring the family up for a weekend of winter fun, call 715-356-7795 to book a cabin. See you soon!
