The First Resort in Minocqua and a Landmark of Local History
Long before modern Minocqua grew into a well known Northwoods destination, this shoreline was already a central gathering place. The land that Northern Resort occupies has roots that stretch back to the earliest days of the region, beginning with an Ojibwe village that once stood near the waterway connecting Lake Minocqua and Lake Kawaguesaga. As settlers arrived and travel routes formed, the area became the site of the first trading activity, the first lodging, and the first community development in what would eventually become the town of Minocqua.

At the turn of the twentieth century, government surveyor Gus Nolan recognized the importance of this location and opened a lodge that welcomed visitors from near and far. By the 1920s, the property had grown to include guest rooms, lakeside cabins, a boathouse, and gathering spaces that hosted families, travelers, and occasional notable guests. People came for the peaceful setting, the spring fed water, and the unmatched fishing that made this spot a Northwoods favorite.

Historic accounts describe this property as the starting point for many of the firsts in Minocqua history. Early trade routes passed through here. The first store and local lodging rose here. Early railroad activity and telegraph service reached this shoreline before the rest of town. Even the name Minocqua is tied to this area, believed to be inspired by the earlier village whose name referred to a midday resting place for travelers.

Over time the property evolved into what is now Northern Resort, but the spirit of those early days remains. Guests who visit often say they feel a sense of connection to the past, along with the timeless calm that has drawn people to these lakes for more than a century. Nitschke's Northern Resort is proud to carry forward the legacy of the first resort in Minocqua, offering a place where families can pause, enjoy the lake, and create traditions that last for generations.
