There’s something undeniably special about gliding across the still waters of the Minocqua Chain of Lakes—the sun glinting off the waves, loons calling in the distance, and that unmistakable Northwoods scent of pine and water. For generations, visitors have come here seeking the same thing: peace, play, and pure Wisconsin beauty.

If you’ve ever looked at a map and wondered what makes this famous chain so captivating—or if you’re planning your first visit to Nitschke’s Northern Resort, right on the shores of Lake Minocqua—you’re in for a treat.

Let’s take a virtual cruise through the chain, lake by lake, with local insight and a touch of wanderlust.

A Legendary Waterway in Wisconsin’s Northwoods

The Minocqua Chain of Lakes connects six sparkling lakes—Kawaguesaga, Minocqua, Mid, Tomahawk, Little Tomahawk, and Mud—spanning roughly 15 miles of navigable water and over 6,000 acres of pure recreation. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) classifies the chain as one of the state’s premier interconnected lake systems, forming part of the Upper Wisconsin River watershed.

Each lake offers its own personality, from quiet wildlife coves to bustling bays lined with restaurants and family cabins. And the best part? You can experience it all right from your boat, kayak, or canoe—without ever leaving the water.

Your Lake-by-Lake Adventure

1. Lake Kawaguesaga: Where the Journey Begins

Starting on the western edge, Lake Kawaguesaga—roughly 700 acres—is a favorite among locals for its scenic beauty and relaxed atmosphere. You’ll find quiet coves ideal for morning paddles, small inlets rich with birdlife, and the ever-popular “Beer Can Island,” a sunny social spot where boaters drop anchor and enjoy a laid-back afternoon.

The DNR notes Kawaguesaga’s average depth of 31 feet and a healthy mix of fish species, including musky, bass, and walleye. It’s the perfect “warm-up” lake to ease into your day on the chain.

2. Minocqua Lake: The Heart of It All

As you pass under the old Bearskin Trail bridge, you’ll glide right into Lake Minocqua—the centerpiece of the chain and the heart of the region. With 1,339 acres of clear water and a depth reaching up to 60 feet, it’s both a recreational hub and a natural marvel.

From your boat, you can wave to the guests at Nitschke’s Northern Resort (a local tradition!) and watch the world go by. Heading left takes you under the old train bridge toward Torpy Park and downtown Minocqua—perfect for a quick grocery stop or an ice cream cone. Turning right leads to open water views, island photo ops, and even the legendary Min-Aqua Bats Water Ski Show, one of the oldest amateur ski shows in the country.

Lake Minocqua is also home to Jossart Island and the historic Beacon Light, both offering postcard-worthy scenery—especially in fall when the trees are ablaze with color.

3. Mid Lake: Small but Serene

Slip through the connecting channel and you’ll reach Mid Lake, the smallest and shallowest of the six—just 221 acres with a maximum depth of 12 feet. While it’s not a top fishing lake due to its muddy bottom, its calm waters are perfect for a quiet cruise, paddleboarding, or spotting eagles overhead.

Mid Lake acts as a gentle transition before entering the wide-open waters of Tomahawk Lake.

4. Tomahawk Lake: The Crown Jewel

The next stretch brings you to Tomahawk Lake, the largest and deepest lake on the chain—3,462 acres with an 84-foot maximum depth and some of the clearest water in northern Wisconsin. According to the DNR, Tomahawk’s clarity and oxygen levels support a thriving ecosystem of musky, walleye, smallmouth bass, and panfish, making it one of the best fishing lakes in the region.

The wide bays and open stretches make it a dream for tubing, wakeboarding, or water skiing. It’s also dotted with small islands like Picnic Island—a favorite for lunch breaks and mid-day swims.

5. Little Tomahawk Lake & 6. Mud Lake: The Quiet Finale

Continue south and you’ll find the final two stops on your chain adventure: Little Tomahawk Lake and Mud Lake.

Little Tomahawk, covering about 163 acres, is known for tranquil fishing and scenic solitude. Anglers often reel in bass, perch, and the occasional trophy walleye here.

The smaller Mud Lake (52 acres) may not win any beauty contests by name, but it’s rich in wildlife and has a peaceful, untouched feel—an ideal endpoint for those who prefer quiet reflection to speed.

Boating the Chain: Routes, Routines & Local Etiquette

The beauty of the Minocqua Chain is that you can design your own adventure. A full round-trip cruise—from Kawaguesaga through Mud Lake and back—covers about 15 miles and can take anywhere from two hours to a full leisurely day. Most boaters prefer to take their time, stopping to swim, fish, or snap photos along the way.

Public Access & Docks: There are public launches on Minocqua, Kawaguesaga, and Tomahawk Lakes, but guests at Nitschke’s Northern Resort enjoy a far better setup—private docks, slips, and trailer parking right on the water. You can step out of your cabin and be on the lake in minutes.

Boating Etiquette: Always slow down near docks or narrow channels, keep right when passing, and give a friendly wave—it’s Northwoods tradition.

Fishing the Minocqua Chain of Lakes

The chain offers something for every angler, from seasoned pros to kids dropping a line for the first time. The DNR’s 2024 Minocqua Chain Walleye Plan confirms that the system supports strong populations of muskellunge, northern pike, bass, bluegill, crappie, and walleye.

New regulations, implemented in 2024, now allow anglers to keep one walleye daily between 18 and 22 inches, or one over 28 inches, encouraging long-term sustainability. Water clarity ranges from “moderately clear” on Minocqua Lake to “very clear” on Tomahawk, offering excellent visibility for sight fishing.

Bring your gear—or better yet, your fishing stories—and you’ll fit right in.

Wildlife & Natural Wonders Along the Chain

A loon swims on a green-tinted lake. Its plumage is black with white patterns, and it has a distinctive red eye, creating a serene scene.

Beyond the fishing and boating, the Minocqua Chain of Lakes is a living landscape teeming with wildlife. Loons, eagles, otters, and herons are common sightings, especially near quieter inlets and islands.

The lakes are part of the Upper Wisconsin River watershed, meaning they play an important role in regional water quality and biodiversity. The DNR continues shoreline restoration and aquatic plant management efforts to keep the ecosystem healthy. Visitors can help by practicing “Clean Boats, Clean Waters”—removing weeds and checking for invasive species before trailering their boats.

When to Visit the Minocqua Chain of Lakes

Summer: Peak season for swimming, tubing, and long days on the boat.

Fall: Crisp air, golden shorelines, and fewer boats—ideal for quiet cruising and leaf-peeping.

Winter: Once frozen, parts of the chain become a playground for ice fishing and snowmobiling, connecting directly to the Northwoods trail system.

No matter the season, the chain offers a reason to visit—and a new way to experience Minocqua’s timeless beauty.
