December 10, 2018

Unlike any other place in the world, Minocqua, Wisconsin has some of the most beautiful landscapes during the winter season. From frozen glacial lakes to snow-lined forests and mini snow mountains, the Northwoods is the perfect spot to enjoy a quiet day or a wild adventure in nature.

While some may cringe at the forecast of snow, we know better. Snow in Minocqua creates the ideal atmosphere for a day of fun. Guests of Nitschke's Northern Resort can ice skate, snowmobile, go sledding or skiing, among many other activities. There are local festivals, annual outings, competitions, fantastic shopping and even beer fests (we ARE in the Northwoods ya' know).

Top 5 choices for winter fun activities in the Northwoods

#5. Ice Skating.

Ice skating can be a most memorable experience, especially for young children. With many ice skating rinks available at locations such as Torpy Park, Brandy Park and Lakeland Hawks Ice Arena, there is always room for you and your family to play on the ice. Rentals and restrooms available at most rinks.

#4. Snowshoeing and Cross Country Skiing.

For the active couple looking to spend a day in the crisp, fresh air of winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are great options. Just a short trip from Minocqua is the North Lakeland Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters. This naturally-preserved area offers a 12 mile trail system for your enjoyment. Snowshoe rentals are included with membership or available for just $5 for non-members.

#3. Snowtubing and Skiing

Minocqua Winter Park is one of the top facilities in Wisconsin for winter sports. From ice skating to snowshoeing to tubing, this place has it all! Known for it's biggest hill, Squirrel Hill, Minocqua Winter Park offers something for everyone to do. Snowtubing is available every weekend and skiing is available throughout the week. Tubers can slide down across 400' of sliding space, then hook up to the tube lift enjoying the breathtaking views. After being effortlessly lifted to the top of the hill, tubers can do it all over again. If playing in the snow isn't your thing, no worries, you can stay warm while watching snowtubers fly down the 70' hill in the chalet while sipping on some hot, made fresh soup.

#2. Ice Fishing.

Who doesn't enjoy a day on the frozen lake hanging with friends and family over an ice fishing hole? (Me neither, but the guys do!) Send the guys out to catch tonight's dinner, but make sure to read through the trail and lake reports to ensure that the ice has reached a safe 6" before walking on the lake. A days catch could include many types of pan fish, walleye and even northerns. Nitschke's Northern Resort is actually ideal for ice fishing, being located directly on Lake Minocqua. Just get your gear together and walk onto the lake, it's that simple and fun!

#1. Snowmobiling.

You know we saved the best for last right?! Snowmobiling has got to be the top winter sport in the area and for good reason. Many businesses begin catering to snowmobilers by making convenient pit stops along the many trails in the area. Minocqua is home to over 1600 feet of neatly-groomed snowmobile trails making it a hub for sledders of all ages and abilities. Don't have a snowmobile of your own? No worries, there are plenty of rental stores in the area to get you hooked up with a sled.
